To offer each pregnant mum a wonderful and memorable experience during the birth of her baby, our delivery suites are designed with our patients’ comfort and convenience in mind. The 11 delivery suite rooms are all single-bedded, each well equipped with clinical facilities and decorated in soothing shades.
On average, the hospital delivers more than 6,000 babies in a year. To ensure the safe delivery of baby and to look after the pregnant mum well, our midwifery team at the delivery suites keeps up to date with knowledge and skills through continuing education combined with in-house training in labour and birthing process.
In addition, the operating theatres, neonatal intensive care and high dependency units are all located within close proximity on the same level of the building. This will facilitate the delivery of multi-disciplinary care for mothers and their babies during high risk pregnancies.
The pregnant mum’s partner is encouraged to stay with her at all times in the delivery suite, to provide the emotional support crucially needed just before the baby arrives.
Each room is equipped with foetal monitoring and baby resuscitation system to closely detect foetal movement and identify babies that require immediate delivery. The safety of the mother and baby is of utmost importance to us; pregnant mums and their partners can therefore rest assured that their babies’ as well as their own wellbeing are being monitored at all times.
With the help of our anaesthetic specialist, we also offer epidural service to mothers who require pain relief during labour. Our caring and efficient midwives provide one to one support, making the birthing experience more pleasant and reducing the need for pain relief.
Babies who are well and who do not require special medical attention can stay with their mothers at the nursery located at Our Lady and St Michael’s wards. The specially trained nurses will care for the baby and a team of doctors will monitor the baby’s health each day.
“Rooming-in” helps parents to bond with their newborn babies and learn baby’s habits, likes and dislikes. More importantly, it provides a good opportunity for parents to learn how to care for the baby, so that they can tap on the vast experience of the hospital’s nurses while still in their care at the hospital.
The Nursery is most suited for babies who need regular monitoring by the medical team, and babies whose mothers may not be able to care for them (e.g. immediately after a caesarean section).
Amenities
A neonate is a newborn in his first 28 days of life and they can be born full term or prematurely (before 37 weeks of gestation).
Neonatal care is a specialised field with trained personnel managing these newborn infants.
The neonatal intensive care unit attends to high-risk deliveries, resuscitation of the sick newborn, neonatal intensive care, well-baby nursery care and follow-up. Together with doctors, our dedicated team nurses are able to provide continuous monitoring, investigations and specialized medical and nursing care for these newborns. We are also able to provide pre and post-operative care for neonates requiring surgery.
